El Paso Immigration Lawyer

Becoming a Citizen of the United States

How can the Law Office of Ruben Ortiz assist you with your immigration matter? If your dream is to have you or a loved one become a citizen of the U.S., let us assist you with the naturalization process. It first begins with becoming lawful permanent resident (LPR)

Once you have been a lawful permanent resident for at least five years (or three years if you are a spouse of a U.S. citizen), you may be eligible to begin the naturalization process. Be sure to contact our El Paso immigration attorney as soon as possible to discuss your options.

How Does the Application Process Begin?

With so many barriers along the path towards citizenship, having a knowledgeable immigration lawyer may be essential in helping you on the path towards reaching your goals. First, it begins by filing Form N-400. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will receive the paperwork and review the application. You will also be required to attend an interview.

The interviewer will seek to determine the following:

  • That you have the ability to understand, read, and speak the English language
  • That you understand the history and government in the U.S. (you must pass a civics test)

Note that the USCIS will conduct very thorough reviews on applicant backgrounds. This will be to verify that the applicant is of good moral character and has not committed an aggravated felony or a crime of moral turpitude. An example of a crime of moral turpitude would be murder, kidnapping, or robbery, as examples. These are the types of crimes that the general public would be considered deprived of honesty or morals.

Once the background check clears and the application is approved, you can then begin the citizenship process and receive the Certificate of Naturalization Process.
