Our Story

Rooted in El Paso Since 1998

Ruben Ortiz grew up in El Paso and opened his practice here in May 1998. The firm has since added offices in San Antonio and Las Cruces, but El Paso remains its home base and the place where most of its criminal defense work is handled.

Practicing on the border shapes the work. Clients include families on both sides of the Rio Grande, workers who commute through the ports of entry, Fort Bliss service members, and drivers who spend long hours on I-10. Many prefer to talk through their case in Spanish, and the team does that every day. Attorney Ortiz is licensed in Texas and New Mexico, which matters in a metro area that crosses the state line. Practice Areas

The El Paso office is the only office that handles both of the firm's practice areas. See the full personal injury and criminal defense overviews for more.

Personal Injury

18-Wheeler & Cross-Border Truck Crashes

Freight moving through El Paso's ports of entry and along I-10 puts heavy trucks on local roads every day. These crashes can involve carriers, brokers, and insurers in more than one state or country, so evidence needs to be preserved early.

18-wheeler accident claims

Car Accidents

Crashes on I-10, Loop 375, US 54, and Montana Avenue can cause lasting injuries. We deal with the insurers and explain how Texas fault rules may affect what you can recover.

Car accident claims

Drunk Driver Injuries

When an impaired driver causes a crash, the injured person may have a civil claim separate from any criminal case. In some situations, a business that over-served the driver may also share responsibility.

Drunk driver injury claims

Industrial & Workplace Injuries

Warehouses, manufacturing plants, and distribution centers employ thousands of El Pasoans. Texas employers are not required to carry workers' compensation, and that choice affects whether you can sue the employer directly.

Industrial accident claims

Pedestrian Accidents

Downtown streets near the international bridges see heavy foot traffic alongside cars and buses. We help pedestrians and their families understand who may be responsible after a crash.

Pedestrian accident claims

Wrongful Death

Texas law allows a surviving spouse, children, and parents to bring a wrongful death claim. We walk families through who may file, what the claim can include, and the deadlines that apply.

Criminal Defense

Federal & Bridge Cases

Arrests at El Paso's ports of entry are often charged in federal court. These cases move under federal rules and sentencing guidelines, so early representation matters.

Bridge and border case defense

Sierra Blanca Checkpoint Cases

The Border Patrol checkpoint on I-10 east of El Paso produces many drug and immigration-related stops. Search and seizure questions are often central to these cases.

Sierra Blanca checkpoint defense

DWI / DUI

A DWI arrest in El Paso County can bring both a criminal case and a separate license suspension proceeding with its own short deadline. We help you respond to both.

DWI defense

Drug Charges

Possession, distribution, and trafficking charges can be filed in state or federal court depending on the facts. The court and charge shape every decision that follows.

Drug charge defense

Assault & Violent Crimes

Assault, family violence, and weapons charges carry serious consequences for jobs, housing, and immigration status. We review the evidence and explain your options at every stage.

Violent crime defense

Expunctions & Nondisclosure

An old arrest or charge can follow you into job and apartment applications. Texas law allows some records to be expunged or sealed through an order of nondisclosure.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Our El Paso Office

Where is the firm's El Paso office?

The main office is at 1141 E. Rio Grande Ave., El Paso, TX 79902, and the office phone is 915-545-1616. It has been the firm's headquarters since Ruben Ortiz opened his practice in 1998. Please call before visiting so the right member of the team is available to meet with you.

Does the El Paso office handle criminal defense as well as injury cases?

Yes. The El Paso office handles both. Criminal matters include federal and bridge cases, Sierra Blanca checkpoint stops, DWI, drug charges, violent crimes, and record expunctions. Personal injury consultations are free; criminal defense consultations are handled case by case, so call to discuss your situation.

I was hit by a commercial truck from across the border. Can the firm help?

Yes. Crashes with trucks that cross through El Paso's ports of entry can involve carriers, brokers, and insurers in more than one state or country, and federal trucking rules often apply. The firm can review the crash report, identify who may be responsible, and explain the options available to you.

What if I live in El Paso but the accident happened in New Mexico?

Attorney Ortiz is licensed in both Texas and New Mexico, so the firm can review cases on either side of the state line. Which state's law applies, and its filing deadlines, depends on the facts of the case. New Mexico generally allows three years to file an injury lawsuit, while Texas generally allows two.

Does the firm represent Fort Bliss service members and their families?

Yes, in civilian personal injury and criminal matters. If a crash involved a government vehicle or happened on federal property, different federal rules and deadlines may apply, and military justice matters are handled separately. Call the office so the team can review where and how the incident happened.

Can I speak with someone in Spanish?

Yes. Attorney Ruben Ortiz and the El Paso team work in English and Spanish every day. Sí, hablamos español. You can tell your story, ask questions, and review documents in the language you prefer. Visit the firm's Spanish-language page for more information.

What are the deadlines for an injury claim in El Paso?

In Texas, the general deadline to file an injury lawsuit is two years from the date of the injury. Claims against a government entity, such as the City of El Paso, El Paso County, or a state agency, generally require written notice within six months, and city charters can set shorter periods. Calling soon after an injury helps protect these deadlines.

Where can I find answers to more El Paso legal questions?

The firm keeps two El Paso question-and-answer pages: one for personal injury in El Paso and one for criminal defense in El Paso. For questions about your own situation, call 915-545-1616 or request a consultation online.
