Texas Points System
Fight Your Ticket with an El Paso Traffic Ticket Lawyer
Texas vehicle laws use a points system called the Driver Responsibility Program (DRP) to keep drivers safe. If a driver commits a violation on the road, their ticket will add points to their license based on the severity of the offense. Once that driver has reached too many points, their license will be suspended or unable to be renewed until the points are resolved. The El Paso traffic ticket attorney at the Law Offices of Ruben Ortiz has two decades of experience helping clients resolve their traffic issues with minimal consequences. If you are facing license suspension due to having too many points, call our firm today.

How Points Are Valued
While points alone are not enough to suspend your license, reaching six points will add further fines (called surcharges) to any violations for which you are ticketed. Moving violations will add two points to your record, and any violations that result in a collision will add three.
Surcharges for violations are as follows:
- $1,000 – DWI first offense
- $1,500 – DWI second offense
- Up to $250 – Driving without insurance
- $250 – Driving without a valid license
- Up to $100 – Driving without a license
This means that once you have reached six points on your license, each of the above surcharges will need to be paid for three years — once for every year the traffic violation is on your record.
